Clothes Distribution at Sundarbans in the Durga puja

 


This time of year, a special feeling fills the air. It's the magical essence of Durga Puja, a festival that brings with it a sense of hope, new beginnings, and boundless joy. For so many of us, this celebration feels incomplete without the simple pleasure of wearing a new saree or a new set of clothes. It's a small tradition, but one that holds so much meaning.

Here at the Sukher Swarga Foundation, we believe that this joy should be for everyone. For the past four years, we've been working to make that a reality for the communities we serve in the Sundarbans. This year, for our fifth annual clothing drive, we're aiming to bring smiles to over 200 members of a local indigenous community. We're also doing something extra special to honor the backbone of our conservation efforts—our "Mangroves Green Women."

A Saree for a Saree

You might be wondering, who are the "Mangroves Green Women"? They are the incredible, dedicated women from the local communities who have worked tirelessly to protect their home. Their hands have nurtured over 100,000 mangrove saplings at Sundarbans Mangroves nursery ( Biggest self-help group nursery in Sundarban) , creating a living shield against cyclones and floods. They are the guardians of the Sundarbans, and their efforts are a testament to what local empowerment can achieve.

To thank these 29 remarkable women for their immense hard work and dedication, we want to give each of them a new saree. It's more than just a gift; it's a token of our profound gratitude, a small way to say thank you for their big impact.

Sundarban Mangrove Nursery | Sukher Swarga's Mangrove Nursery #H2 #H3

The Sundarbans is a special place, World Heritage Site/ Biosphere Reserve/ National Park/ Wildlife sanctuary/ Tiger Reserve full of amazing nature. But it's also a place that needs protection from climate change. Mangrove trees are the best natural defense, and a group called the Sukher Swarga Foundation, Top 10 Sundarban Grassroots NGO is doing incredible work to protect them. This year, 2025 the foundation has done something amazing. They grew 100,000 (one lakh) mangrove saplings in their nursery with the support of Self help Group Women till now. That's a huge number and shows just how dedicated they are to their mission. They don't just use these saplings for one thing. They have two main goals:   Helping Others : They sell a lot of their saplings to other non-profit groups (NGOs). This helps more people plant trees and protect more areas.
