Growing Hope, Root by Root: Meet the Women Protecting the Sundarbans



In the heart of Sandeshkhali, where the land meets the water and the rhythm of life is deeply intertwined with nature, a quiet revolution is taking foot – or rather, root. Here, amidst the vital ecosystems of the Sundarbans, the Sukher Swarga Foundation is not just planting trees; we're cultivating hope, empowering women, and building resilience against the stark realities of climate change.

We're incredibly proud to introduce you to one of our six women-run mangrove nursery gardens, a vibrant testament to community spirit and environmental stewardship. Look closely at this picture. What you see is more than just a field of green. It’s over 30,000 thriving mangrove saplings, each one carefully tended by dedicated hands like those of Anima Das, a remarkable woman beneficiary from Manipur, Sandeshkhali.

Anima, along with other incredible women, is at the forefront of our mission. Every day, they nurture these young plants, preparing them for their vital role in protecting our precious coastline. Why mangroves? Because they are nature's unsung heroes. These unique trees are unmatched in their ability to:

  Combat Climate Change: Mangroves are incredible carbon sinks, absorbing vast amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere.

 Protect Our Shores: Their intricate root systems act as natural barriers, safeguarding communities from erosion, tidal surges, and the increasing intensity of storms.

 Support Biodiversity: They provide crucial habitats and breeding grounds for a diverse array of fish, crabs, and other wildlife, sustaining the livelihoods of local communities.

The effects of climate change are no longer a distant threat; they are a harsh reality for communities in the Sundarbans and across the globe. Rising sea levels, unpredictable weather patterns, and increased natural disasters underscore the urgent need for action. By planting trees, especially resilient species like mangroves, we are not just investing in the environment; we are investing in our very survival.

The Sukher Swarga Foundation believes in a holistic approach to sustainable development. That's why our mangrove nursery project goes beyond environmental conservation. It's also about:

  Women's Empowerment: Providing women like Anima with training, resources, and a sustainable livelihood, fostering economic independence and leadership in their communities.

  Rural Development: Creating opportunities and strengthening the social fabric of villages in the Sundarbans.

Sundarban Mangrove Nursery | Sukher Swarga's Mangrove Nursery #H2 #H3

The Sundarbans is a special place, World Heritage Site/ Biosphere Reserve/ National Park/ Wildlife sanctuary/ Tiger Reserve full of amazing nature. But it's also a place that needs protection from climate change. Mangrove trees are the best natural defense, and a group called the Sukher Swarga Foundation, Top 10 Sundarban Grassroots NGO is doing incredible work to protect them. This year, 2025 the foundation has done something amazing. They grew 100,000 (one lakh) mangrove saplings in their nursery with the support of Self help Group Women till now. That's a huge number and shows just how dedicated they are to their mission. They don't just use these saplings for one thing.
