Mangrove Bachao: A Story of Fences, Forests, and a Future

 

MANGROVE BACHAO PROJECT 

In the heart of the Sundarbans, where the land meets the sea, a quiet but powerful movement is taking root. It's the "Mangrove Bachao" project, led by the Sukher Swarga Foundation. This project is much more than just planting trees; it's a testament to community resilience and the power of a simple, strategic fence.

When we plant a young mangrove sapling, it's a fragile promise. It must survive the constant push and pull of the tides, the currents of the river, and the threat of grazing animals. That's why the next step in our process is crucial: the art of building a protective fence.

Our team, working side-by-side with local villagers, constructs these barriers using locally sourced materials like sturdy bamboo and discarded fishing nets. They act as guardians, giving each sapling the time and space it needs to grow. But the fences do more than just protect. They also slow down the tidal flow, causing silt and sediment to drop right where we need it. This natural process helps rebuild the shoreline, literally creating new land and stabilizing the coast.

Every fence we build is a a line drawn in the sand against erosion. It's a living barrier that secures not just the trees, but the homes and livelihoods of the people who call this unique place home. This is the heart of our work: building a sustainable future, one fence and one forest at a time.

Sundarban Mangrove Nursery | Sukher Swarga's Mangrove Nursery #H2 #H3

The Sundarbans is a special place, World Heritage Site/ Biosphere Reserve/ National Park/ Wildlife sanctuary/ Tiger Reserve full of amazing nature. But it's also a place that needs protection from climate change. Mangrove trees are the best natural defense, and a group called the Sukher Swarga Foundation, Top 10 Sundarban Grassroots NGO is doing incredible work to protect them. This year, 2025 the foundation has done something amazing. They grew 100,000 (one lakh) mangrove saplings in their nursery with the support of Self help Group Women till now. That's a huge number and shows just how dedicated they are to their mission. They don't just use these saplings for one thing. They have two main goals:   Helping Others : They sell a lot of their saplings to other non-profit groups (NGOs). This helps more people plant trees and protect more areas.
